I started my Networked Learning journey without any knowledge of video editing, and not even knowing which video editing software to use. (Click here to read my first Networked Learning Project blog post.) I think that I have come a long way in a short space of time. Now, I know how to arrange video clips in a sequence, split clips, add and detach sound, and insert titles. The video below shows a brief synopsis of the before and after of my learning. While working on my Networked Learning Project, I encountered several challenges. So far, the most difficult one was learning how to add subtitles. Through doing some research, I learned that the only way to add text in iMovie is by using the Titles option, but I wanted something more. I wanted to be able to insert text in specific scenes, not as the title at the beginning of the video. To find a solution, I went on YouTube and other affinity spaces both in English and Korean, and I learned that subtitles could be added using Adobe Photoshop. So, my next challenge is to learn how to make subtitles using Adobe Photoshop! Tutorials on YouTube were the most helpful resources that I have used. Compared to other resources such as Reddit and Apple Support Communities, it was easier to use YouTube as I was already familiar with its format. Bransford, Brown & Cocking (2000) mentioned that in order to optimize learning “attention must be given to what is taught, why it is taught, and what competence or mastery looks like” (p. 24). YouTubers modeled the whole procedures, explained their actions, and always showed the end product. Also, the suggestions and tips they provided as experts were beneficial. Resources:
